It is hard to believe that it has been over a year since I had the opportunity to delve into the depths of global health right in the heat of Ecuador. My experience was not just a “Trip with Timmy,” nor was it just a summer spent abroad. It was a commitment, a lesson learned, and a reality- all of which I gradually noticed upon my return to the States as a student who couldn’t wait to play an even larger role in healthcare.
As a newly licensed healthcare professional, I have quickly learned to utilize the tools I gained from my experience in practice every single day- flexibility, resourcefulness, and passion at the top of the list. When you sign up for this global health challenge, you are allowing yourself the great opportunity to become an even stronger student and professional, to collaborate with creative and driven people, and to improve the future of healthcare. I warn you that this experience will stay with you for a lifetime- you will be consumed by the challenge, ambivalent about how to solve it, curious about the cultures of other countries, and most importantly, you will be inspired to help others indefinitely. It is a never-ending journey that I challenge you to join.
How open will you be? How far will you go? What will you do with limited resources? What do you think needs to be done? Why should you be on the forefront of global health?
